I often get asked what it’s like working in the ski industry, and my answer is usually the same. I tell people it certainly has it perks, but that at the end of the day, we’re just a coterie of snowsliders who flatter one another and promote each other’s reputations. We care too much about winning awards, being the best, and making more money. Which leads us into our next problem—we often lose sight of the bigger picture; the skiers who keep the fire stoked (Chris Rubens–p.54, Mike Shaw–p.26). /
And that’s why I’m going to use this space to say as many thank yous as I possibly can. Buckle in, because it’s a long list. /
First and foremost, I’d like to thank our tight knit group of contributors. Without them, this magazine wouldn’t have been possible. They work day in and day out, simply for the love of it (Two-Four–p.16). A lot of their stories stem from unplanned journeys and wild adventures (Viewfinder: Reuben Krabbe–p.66) that we all find ourselves in—because hey, we’re skiers too. Unfortunately many of these great tales often go untold (Mt. Baldy–p.60), because most of the time, they don’t feature Proe McSponsored launching off of the mega feature on his 2018 skis. Although if you’re into that, you know we have you covered (JF Houle–p.46). /
A monumental thank you is in order to all the brands and resorts that have supported us this issue. They believe in what we’re doing and are doing their part to make sure quality Canadian ski journalism continues to adapt to the ever changing media landscape. We really do hope you guys enjoy what we were able to create. /
Thank you to all the staff at SBC SKIER (Lift Operators–p.06) that have made this relaunch possible. Our owner Jay Mandarino, Matt and Arlen from sales, Filip and Michael from design, and Filomena Tamburri. A special thanks to SNOWBOARD CANADA’s editor, David MacKinnon, for being a second set of eyes and ears when I needed them most. /
I can’t begin to express my gratitude towards all those working their ass off to make our community a better place. Matt Walker and his crew for giving me hope for our future. Eric Iberg, for everything he has done with Inspired Media —if it wasn’t for you buddy, skiing would definitely be a lot less fun. Felix Rioux, for teaching me the ropes behind the lens and creating the best festival I’ve had the pleasure of attending. My counterpart across the pond at downdays.eu, Ethan Stone, who always keeps me on my toes with his consistent stream of great ski journalism. And of course the mad genius running the show over at Newschoolers.com, Doug Bishop. /
I’d like to personally thank all of those who have helped me get where I am today and who have built SBC into the brand it is. Cko, Schmuck, Les, and Scott are a few of the standouts. There are others out there, and I’m sure you know who you are. I guess I owe you a cold one next time we cross paths. /
And last but certainly not least, I’d like to thank you, our readers, for being the foundational support for what we do here at SBC. Thanks guys. Thank you so much.
