When the valley turns green it’s easy to start thinking summer thoughts, but we’re here to tell you that skiing is far from over in Whistler. So when you think summer, think summer skiing in Whistler because the Horstman Glacier on Whistler Blackcomb will be open for skiing until the end of July. Yup, that’s like half the summer you can still go skiing in Whistler. Ski junkies rejoice, you can have your fix for another few weeks.
Summer skiing isn’t a new thing, but Momentum Camps dished some intel that was news to us. As one of the only summer ski camp providers left in Canada, Momentum still has a few openings for you to experience park laps, moguls and freestyle skiing in July – crazy right?
FIVE THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT SUMMER SKIING IN WHISTLER WITH MOMENTUM CAMP
ONE: WIN STUFF
This year Momentum has 26 pairs of skis to giveaway. The skis are provided by K2, Armada, Line, and Roxy. Skis are not the only things up for grabs at camp, there are tons of rad prizes to be had. Anna Segal, coach and camp coordinator says “no camper leaves empty-handed.”
TWO: PHOTOSHOOTS
Momentum’ has a photo and video program called “Exposure.” It is designed for those looking to hone in their action sports filming and photography skills. Not only do campers in this program get coached by media leaders in the action sports industry, but they also get to shoot with pro skiers and snowboarders on the glacier along with a private sunset shoot to learn how to shoot action in a variety of light.
THREE: LADY SHRED
Session 5 is Girls Week and was started by the late Sarah Burke who was a long time camper, coach and female freeskiing pioneer. While guys still attend this session, Momentum gives extra love to the girls, bringing on the best female skiers to coach, lining up girls only activities and running a special girls evening shoot up on the glacier.
FOUR: COACHES WITH STREET CRED
The coaches are relevant in the ski industry and an active inspiration to campers. During the last two Winter Olympics (2014, 2018), 9 of the coaches on the Momentum roster won Olympic medals and another 17 competed in either freestyle or freeski events.
FIVE: DEEP SKI ROOTS
Momentum Camps owners John Smart and Julia Smart were both World Cup Hot Dog royalty. John was on the Canadian Mogul team and won 13 World Cup medals. Julia was on the British ski ballet team and placed 4th at the 1992 Winter Olympics.
BONUS: Snowboarding will be at Momentum this summer for the first time ever! Gave a friend that boards? You can still go to camp together!
