The smell of bacon winds through the line maze at the base of Revelstoke Mountain Resort as early birds cook breakfast with jet boilers and camp stoves. At 6:30 am it is still dark but the line is 100 strong and stoke levels are high. Closure rumors and “epic” stories from previous opening days are passed up and down the line via broken telephone. By 8:30, it seems the whole town of Revelstoke has converged at the base of RMR for opening day. And why wouldn’t they? For the first season opener as far as anyone can remember, the sun is shining.

Although RMR usually has a deeper base depth around this time of year, Saturday December 3rd 2022 marked the first year that the mountain has been open from the top to the bottom on opening day. Low base depth in conjunction with high alpine winds on the days leading up to opening day left some areas wind scoured and bare, but where there’s wind there’s wind loaded pockets! There were definitely some deep turns to be had in the vast alpine terrain. The numerous gladded tree runs of Revelstoke were sheltered from the wind and provided the masses with the powder snow that they had woken up early and even camped overnight for.

Despite a few dings to the planks from some exposed sections, the 1st day at RMR 2023 was one for the books. I am confident in saying that the locals and visitors alike are stoked for the next 135 days of the season.
