After one of the snowiest winters in resort history, Sunshine Village Ski Resort is bringing back summer skiing.

The resort plans to reopen June 20 for 16 days of skiing and snowboarding, with operations expected to run through July 5. The Strawberry Express chairlift is set to spin, with additional terrain possible depending on conditions.

After opening Nov. 2, its earliest start in at least 40 years, Sunshine received nearly 1,000 centimetres of snowfall this season. The resort still has roughly a quarter of that snowpack remaining, setting it up for what could become its longest season ever at 213 skiable days.

“This season has been a bit of a fairy tale,” said vice-president of brand and communications Kendra Scurfield.

Sunshine last offered summer skiing in 2022, when a deep snowpack allowed the resort to reopen for six bonus days. Before that, summer operations hadn’t happened since the early 1990s.

“It will be slushy summer skiing, high vibes, and just the novelty of skiing in July in the Canadian Rockies,” Scurfield said.

Weekend entertainment, Canada Day celebrations, terrain park features, lodging, restaurants and shopping are all expected to be part of the summer operation. Current passholders will receive 50 per cent off summer skiing, while 2026-27 pass renewals will include access. For more info, click here

In a day and age where glaciers are receding and summer ski camps are being forced to suspend or cancel operations due to lack of snow, Sunshine spinning lifts into July feels like a pretty nice story.
