Level 1 kicked off this year’s SuperUnknown with a few days of slush and sun up north at Banff Sunshine Village. A last-second change due to snow conditions at the original host mountain, Palisades Tahoe.
SuperUnknown, run by Level 1 Productions, is an annual event bringing in talented and creative amateur skiers through video submissions. A select group of finalists then share a week of skiing with previous SuperUnknown winners as well as other invited pros.

Started by Josh Berman in 2004, SuperUnknown acted as a way for talented up-and-coming skiers to gain exposure and sponsorship, in an alternative route to the regular competition scene. It also acted as an opportunity to shoot with Level 1.
Now, 23 years later, Sunshine Village welcomed over 60 athletes for half a week of throwing down at SVV park.

On the final day, Josh and his team announced that Alex Bateman and Eleonora Ferrari were this year’s winners of SuperUnknown 23. Other awards were given out, including the riders of the week, which went to Ryan Buttars and Olivia Asselin. Remco Kayser was given the “OG” award for best rider over 30. Dasha Agafanova-Knight and Liam Baxter were the recipients of the Cheap Fun PUB BEER award.

SuperUnknown is an event that mixes up-and-coming talent with well-established pros. It gives young guns something to aspire to and allows them to see how they stack up against the big dogs. It also acts as an introduction to new friends, filmmakers, and photographers in the industry. Level 1 has been doing park shoots for over 20 years, and we hope they don’t stop anytime soon.
Thank you, Level 1 and Sunshine Village, for putting on this top-notch event. We are excited to see where this excellent partnership might lead in the future!
